NAPPER
This story was shot down by the collection I wrote it for, but was picked up by Mystery Magazine, and drew the attention of editor Michael Bracken for his Best Of anthology. There's a moral in there.
Getting into AHMM was a goal since childhood. Editor Linda Landrigan liked my story about beach bum Charlie Ash and gave me a shot. This introduced me to the Black Orchid Novella Award, which I'd win in 2025.
First big score was Mystery Magazine's anthology "Die Laughing." MM took two more before closing shop in 2025, bless 'em. I don't think "Napper" is funnier than anything else I write, but I guess that says something.
As so many of mine do, this 2025 story started as a joke, but it turned into an excuse to employ my wasted classical education. Second time my name was on a cover, which is a thrill.

ABOUT PETE

I've been fortunate to file my taxes as "filmmaker" all my professional career, but since childhood I knew I wanted to be a published author. When the plague locked us down, I turned my energies to achieving this. I began writing novels and short stories and have continued since.
So far, I've been published more than 25 times, was selected for Best Private Eye Stories of 2025, and won the Black Orchid Novella Award from the Nero Wolfe Society. I still create film for industry and theatrical release, but my new goal is to get my novels out to the public.
